Statement
Over the years John Mayer has developed symbolic equivalents in his art that relate to certain aspects of nature as well as to his own inner emotional state. Mayer’s paintings have a translucent, ethereal quality, which transports the viewer to distant places such as the island of Moorea in Tahiti, Vauban’s citadel in Besançon France and Eao Valley on the island of Maui, Hawaii. He draws upon his own travel experiences in the development stages of his work, using them as a vehicle in his search for a painterly analogue to his visual memory. Mayer absorbs and translates these powerful recollections through what he refers to as a “Zen, Dream-State” painting process, a solitary process crucial to the creation of the works, which become a personal expression of the inner spirit. “My painting is informed and determined by many visual, emotional and spiritual experiences. My images are abstracted from real experience and are the embodiment of a deep reverence for the natural environment. Beyond that I have wanted to explore the architectural elements of space while remaining painterly.”
